On April 23 Radio Azatliq, RFE/RL's Tatar-Bashkir Service was awarded a diploma for the promotion of the Turkic culture and society from The Turkic Arts and Culture Organization (TURKSOY).

The award was presented to the entire service of Radio Azatliq by TURKSOY's Secretary General Dusen Kaseinov during his visit to Kazan. Radio Azatliq was selected to receive the award by TURKSOY leadership for its outstanding continued coverage on Turkic art, culture, history, language and people.

TURKSOY is an international organization established in 1993 which unites Turkic-speaking people across Central Asia, Russia, Turkey and Azerbaijan. The organization aims to protect and promote cultural values of Turkic people as well as to strengthen cultural links between those historically and linguistically related nations.

Upon receiving the award Radio Azatliq director Rim Gilfanov reiterated the commitment of the Tatar-Bashkir service stating, "Cultural reporting is one of the major points of Tatar-Bashkir service broadcasts, which has been the only international broadcaster in Tatar and Bashkir languages for 56 years, and has become a cultural bridge for all Tatars and Bashkirs all over the world. We pay great attention to covering inter-ethnic and cultural events in wider Eurasian space and will continue to do so in our mission to provide independent media coverage."

The Tatar-Bashkir Service has produced broadcasts in the endangered Crimean Tatar language since the 1960s. For more on RFE/RL's Tatar-Bashkir Service visit them online.
