In the new media/innovation category, the jury was impressed by one blog and two maps. The blog was written by Bohdan Andrusyshyn of our Belarus Service, and the maps were created by the Central Newsroom and by Natiq Zeynalov of the Azerbaijani Service. The newsroom made a live map on the U.S. elections, and the Azerbaijani Service made a map of where statues of Heydar Aliyev can be found around the world.
The top prize in this period goes to the Azerbaijani Service, in recognition of the orginality of the concept. The map is a very effective example of how RFE/RL journalists can use graphics in our daily work. Maps, videos, and photos can often say more about a topic than text. That is why the jury made the decision to give the top award to the Aliyev statues map.
