How is Georgia dealing with its powerful northern neighbor? New RFE/RL reports offer insight:

# Georgia’s policy toward Russia is changing rapidly under the government of Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili. Critics say Tbilisi is softening its stance and risking the country’s security, but officials in the new government say their approach is more pragmatic. Correspondent Brian Whitmore, author of The Power Vertical blog, traveled to Tbilisi for this report.

# Irakli Alasania served as Georgia’s UN Ambassador before resigning in late 2008 and joining the opposition to President Mikheil Saakashvili. He is now Defense Minister in Ivanishvili’s coalition government. Whitmore caught up with Alasania in Tbilisi to discuss the new government’s approach to Russia.

# Responding to what he termed “irresponsible” and “extremely dangerous” comments made by Ivanishvili, Saakashvili has again denied that the previous Georgian government recruited and trained a group of Chechens with the aim of infiltrating them into the Russian Federation.
