A commemoration of the life and contributions of RFE/RL Kyrgyz Service journalist Ulanbek Egizbav took place at RFE/RL's Bishkek Bureau on July 23. Egizbaev died suddenly in an apparent drowning the previous day in Kyrgyzstan's Lake Issyk-Kul.

The well-known investigative reporter and RFE/RL Kyrgyz Service correspondent Ulanbek Egizbaev died while on a family holiday in Cholpon-Ata, Kyrgyzstan. He was only 28 years old.

Born on February 12, 1990 in Kyrgyzstan’s Kochkor district, just west of Lake Issyk-Kul, Ulanbek Egizbaev earned a degree in communications from the Kyrgyz-Turkish "Manas" University in Bishkek in 2013, and obtained a Master’s degree from Bishkek Humanitarian University (BSU) in 2015.

The entire staff of RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service extends its sincere condolences to Ulanbek's parents, wife, and relatives.

Kyrgyz journalism has suffered an irreparable loss. Despite his youth, Ulanbek made a significant contribution to the development of the genre of investigative journalism. His pen produced articles of the highest quality, he shot the sharpest video reports.
