What Does The Killing Of Soleimani Mean For Afghanistan And Pakistan?

Iran Qods Force Commander Qassem Soleimani is mourned in Mashad on December 5.

The Trump administration’s decision to target Qassem Soleimani, the powerful leader of Iran’s Quds Force, with a drone strike has been widely described as one of the most consequential developments for international affairs in quite a few years.

There has been ample commentary on the implications of Soleiman’s death for the Middle East. Less has been said, however, about the implications for Afghanistan and Pakistan—two countries that share an equally long border with Iran and have complex relations with Tehran.

The latest edition of The AfPak File discusses what the killing of General Soleimani means for the security, political, and economic situations in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The guests are Ariane Tabatabai, a political scientist at the RAND Corporation; Fawzia Koofi, a legislator in the Afghan parliament; Sabena Siddiqi, a foreign affairs journalist in Pakistan; and Michael Kugelman, Asia Program deputy director and senior associate for South Asia at the Wilson Center.

Muhammad Tahir, media manager at RFE/RL, moderates the discussion.
