AfPak File Podcast: First Impressions Of Afghan Peace Talks

QATAR -- Taliban co-founder Mullah Baradar speaks, bottom right, talks at the opening session of the peace talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban in Doha, September 12, 2020

After many challenges and false starts, Afghan peace talks began on September 12.

While the launch of the intra-Afghan dialogue represents a major milestone, most experts agree that negotiations will be long, challenging, and often tense.

The latest episode of The AfPak File podcast discusses what to make of the peace talks so far, the likely priorities and goals of each side, and the challenges ahead.

Joining the discussion are Nader Nadery, a member of the Afghan negotiating team; Rahimullah Yusafzai, a senior Pakistani journalist and expert on the Taliban; and Michael Kugelman, Asia Program deputy director and senior associate for South Asia at the Wilson Center.

Muhammad Tahir, media manager for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty in Washington DC, moderates the discussion.
