Everybody Has the Right to Pray

Eka Kevanishvili, a reporter with RFE/RL’s Georgian Service, recently won top honors in a journalism competition sponsored by Georgia’s Office of the Public Defender on the theme, Tolerance and Diversity.

Kevanishvili was recognized in a ceremony in Tbilisi on November 15 on the eve of the International Day of Tolerance for her report, “Everybody Has the Right to Pray,” which covered a rally held the previous July in Georgia’s Dedoplistskaro region in support of religious freedom.

The village had been the site of tensions between Muslim and Christian residents, with the former feeling inhibited about practicing their religion publically.

Kevanishvili’s article was lauded for exposing an issue that afflicts many Georgian communities and contributing to greater inter-faith acceptance.

Georgian officials, foreign diplomats, NGO leaders and representatives of Georgia’s Council of Ethnic Minorities and Religions attended the ceremony.
