Belarus Service Sweeps National Awards For Innovation

Ales Pilecki was recognized at the first Belarusian Journalism—Focus On Innovation awards February 8 for his now famous "Christmas Wrap Up Rap."

Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty’s (RFE/RL) Belarus Service took home nine awards at an inaugural, national media competition called “Belarusian Journalism—Focus On Innovation.”

The Belarus Service won seven awards for most original content and two for innovative social media content. Among the pieces recognized was Ales Pilecki’s now famous 2017 Christmas Wrap Up Rap.

“We’re extremely proud of the recognition our work gets from peers,” said Belarus Service Director Alexander Lukashuk. “But what’s even more important is that the work is not only recognized for excellence, but followed, emulated, further developed—and that’s RFERL’s mission as well.”

Lukashuk added that far from being just about new formats and platforms for storytelling and creative use of multimedia, innovation must be “a state of mind.”

In their first year, the awards are organized by the NGO Press Club Belarus and the Belarusian Association Of Journalists. 18 major media organizations competed for awards this year.

The winners were recognized at a February 8 ceremony in Minsk.
