As violence descends again on much of Iraq, RFE/RL Radio Free Iraq correspondent Nihad Al-Bayati found himself at the scene of a shoot-out in Kirkuk on December 4, where he was trapped until late at night as police cordoned off the area and searched for remaining militants. Gunmen attacked the headquarters of a police intelligence unit in Kirkuk, northern Iraq, sparking a shoot-out with police that left at least five people dead. Several of the attackers set off suicide bombs before police regained control of the building.
