The OSCE has announced a global campaign to end impunity for crimes against journalists.
A statement released today by the office of Dunja Mijatovic, the OSCE's Representative on Freedom of the Media, refers to journalists as "witnesses of our times" and warned, "The scale of attacks on and harassment of media professionals keeps growing throughout the OSCE region."
The initiative will raise awareness about challenges to journalists' safety and seek to guarantee their security at all times.
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has also campaigned vigorously against the impunity that perpetrators of crimes against journalists overwhelmingly enjoy. CPJ research shows that killers go free in nine out of 10 murders of journalists. Iraq leads the organization's "Impunity Index" with over 90 unsolved murders of journalists in the last decade. In RFE/RL's broadcast region, Pakistan, Russia and Afghanistan are also counted among those countries where perpetrators are most likely to go free.
