New Report Cites Pakistan's 'Perfect Record of Impunity'

"Roots of Impunity," a report issued this week by the media watchdog, Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), takes an unflinching look at the murders of journalists and the impunity of those who kill them in Pakistan.

"Fatalities have jumped in the past five years, and today, Pakistan ranks among the world’s deadliest nations for the press," the introduction reads.

The report provides close analysis of two targeted killings, that of Wali Khan Babar in Karachi and Mukarram Khan Aatif in the tribal areas.

The report blames the country's culture of "manipulation, intimidation, and retribution" for the fact that more than 20 journalists were murdered over the last 10 years in response to their work, and concludes with recommendations for the Pakistani authorities, news media and the international community.
