In public comments reflecting rising threats against journalists and official inaction against those who perpetrate them, Jeff Shell, Chairman of the Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG) said,
"In a world that is increasingly integrated and interdependent, attacks on journalists are attacks on civil society and the entire international system. The BBG urges the Security Council to take more aggressive steps to hold member states accountable to the guarantees of Article 19."
Article 19 is the passage in the UN Declaration of Human Rights that enshrines the fundamental rights to free speech and exchange of information.
The BBG remarks accompanied a collective statement to the UN Security Council from the DG7, a coalition of seven international media outlets, to stand up against media suppression and urge governments hold to account those who harm journalists and media workers.
The BBG is an independent federal agency, supervising all U.S. government-supported, civilian international media, whose mission is to inform, engage and connect people around the world in support of freedom and democracy.
