Khadija Ismayilova Discusses Human Rights In Azerbaijan On BBC

Azerbaijani investigative journalist Khadija Ismayilova was a guest on BBC's Radio 4 on April 17 to discuss the smear campaign she alleges is being conducted against her by the Azeri government in retaliation for her journalism.

Ismayilova, RFE/RL's former Baku bureau chief and current host of the popular "After Work" daily talk show, also discusses the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest to be hosted by Azerbaijan.

In Baku, the contest is being promoted as a major coup for a country that Ismayilova calls "a failed state." But Ismayilova says the government's "propaganda" surrounding the contest will not make up for the hardships its citizens are experiencing.

"It cannot be a remedy for all the losses people suffered and still are suffering," she said.

Listen to the full broadcast of BBC's "Woman's Hour," which also includes BBC journalist Jenny Norton discussing Ismayilova's case with host Jane Garvey.
