Russian journalism student Natalia Kondrashova learned about the 1968 Soviet invasion and occupation of Czechoslovakia for the first time in a university lecture. She was shocked she’d never heard about it before, and became fascinated by this period in history.
“Unfortunately, this part of our history isn’t covered very thoroughly in Russian schools,” she told RFE/RL. With the 50th anniversary of the invasion approaching, Kondrashova decided to explore the legacy of the invasion in Russia for her special project as an RFE/RL Vaclav Havel Journalism Fellow, interviewing Russians on the streets of Moscow to find out what they know and what they think about August 21, 1968.
