RFE/RL Reporter Named Top Political Journalist In Moldova (UPDATED)

Valentina Ursu, RFE/RL's correspondent in Chisinau, interviews Ion Sturza, former Moldovan prime minister on 21Aug2012
The popular Moldovan news website Tribuna has ranked the top 10 female political journalists in Moldova, and RFE/RL’s Radio Europa Liberă’s Valentina Ursu has earned the top spot on their list.

“There is no politician in Moldova who could be able to refuse her request to give an interview,” Tribuna stated in their accolades of Ursu.

Ursu, who has worked for Radio Europa Liberă in its Chisinau bureau since 2004, attributes her influence among political leaders to being consistently unbiased -- and tenacious.

“I look at all the politicians with the same critical eye,” she says. “And they know that, at the end, I will get the answer to my tough questions even if they do their best to avoid them.”

Reflecting on her role as a journalist Ursu says, “All political events in Moldova seem to be significant, so I try to inject realism and truth into my stories. The light I try to shed in my reports almost always has a political dimension.”

Her recent pieces include interviews with Prime Minister Vlad Filat, Parliament Speaker Marian Lupu, and Agricultural Minister Vasile Bumacov.

Before working for RFE/RL, Ursu spent nearly two decades with Moldova’s national radio, TeleRadio Moldova.
