Nominations have been announced for the 18th Annual Webby Awards, a leading international prize for excellence and innovation on the Internet, and RFE/RL has been selected as an Official Honoree for the third year in a row.
RFE/RL was recognized for the third time in the "Web / Radio and Podcasts" category, and for the first time for "Mobile and Apps / News." Last year, a video report from RFE/RL's Afghan service was honored in the category for "News & Politics: Individual Episode."
"This recognition should make it abundantly clear that while RFE/RL continues to embrace traditional media in some markets, we are out front and on the cutting edge of new digital technologies," said editor in chief Nenad Pejic. “Our mobile website was honored because it offers news, live audio programs, video and audio on-demand, polls, photo galleries and live blogs to audiences in 25 languages” he said, adding, "Having confirmation from industry experts that we excel in the use of these platforms is a great vote of confidence in our work and our ability to engage our audiences effectively.”
Honorees represent the top 15 percent of the12,000 entries from over 60 countries submitted to the competition this year, and were selected for excellence in the content, structure, navigation, visual design, functionality, interactivity, and overall experience of their products for web and mobile users.
"Honorees are setting the standard for innovation and creativity on the Internet," said David-Michel Davies, Executive Director of the Webby Awards. "It is an incredible achievement to be selected among the best from the 12,000 entries we received this year.”
The Webby Awards will be presented at a ceremony in New York city on May 19.
