Watch the briefing here:
Media freedom is severely restricted in Azerbaijan, according to Freedom House and Reporters Without Borders, and the country is perceived as highly corrupt, according to Transparency International. The Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) named Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev its 2012 "Organized Crime and Corruption Person of the Year." What drives a journalist to risk professional and personal retribution to investigate and expose official wrongdoing in such challenging circumstances?
Former U.S. Ambassador to Azerbaijan Richard Kauzlarich moderates a panel of practitioners and experts to address this question with a live audience in Washington and online via a Google+ Hangout.
In Washington:
- Nushabe Fatullayeva, Reporter; RFE/RL Azerbaijan Service and OCCRP Fellow and contributor
- Amb. Richard Kauzlarich, former U.S. Ambassador to Azerbaijan (1994-1997)
- Hans Staiger, Program Consultant, International Center for Journalists
In Sarajevo:
- Drew Sullivan, Editor, Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project
