Who was the prominent painter and art theorist Kazimir Malevich? What lies behind the pioneer of geometric abstract art and the founder of the avant-garde movement of "supremacy"?
In coordination with the Czech NGO RUTA and the Embassy of Ukraine in Prague, RFE/RL screened its documentary "Malevich: The Ukrainian Square" to a full audience at the Evald cinema in Prague on Saturday November 17, as part of the Ukrainian Cinema Week in the Czech Republic.
The author, RFE/RL Ukrainian Service journalist Dmytro Julai, said the goal of the film was "to point out the Ukrainian context that influenced Malevich’s life and shaped his aesthetic concepts."
The film was recently screened in Paris in October as part of a showcase about the Ukrainian Avant-garde movement, and shown on Ukrainian public television on August 24 to mark the country's Independence Day.
