Afghan Women’s Rights Advocate Recovering From Attack
Shukria Barakzai, a former journalist and current member of Afghanistan’s parliament, vows to continue to work for a fairer Afghanistan despite the most recent attempt on her life, a suicide bomb attack that killed three and left 20 wounded November 15. In 2002 Barakzai founded “Women’s Mirror,” a national newspaper focusing on women’s issues such as maternal and infant mortality and forced marriage. Since then, she has survived three violent attacks and has been threatened repeatedly. Produced by Malali Bashir and Wali Sabawoon of RFE/RL’s Afghan Service.
