Malala's Story

Malala Yousafzai was shot by the Pakistani Taliban one year ago. On the anniversary of that attack, Radio Mashaal's Abdul Hai Kakar, the journalist who first brought Malala to the world's attention in 2009 as an 11-year old girl who was being deprived of an education by the Taliban, reunites with her in an extensive interview on her life before and after she became a world-renowned campaigner for girls' education, women's rights, and peace in her native Pakistan.

This is Malala's story.

# Interspersed with images of Malala's home in the Swat Valley and the voices of her supporters and critics there, RFE/RL's documentary provides a vivid portrait of politics in Pakistan's volatile tribal regions.

# Malala has called on conspiracy theorists and critics in Pakistan to think about her message to promote the rights of girls and women before condemning her. Imagining an exchange with her Taliban attackers, Malala says, "I just want to go to school, and I want your kids to go to school, too."

# UN Special Envoy for Global Education Gordon Brown says Malala has become a symbol of how much one person can do when she believes in a principle.
