U.S. Congress Pays Tribute to Havel

Czech Republic -- Former Czech President Vaclav Havel speaks at RFE/RL editorial meeting, Prague 27Mar2007
The U.S. House of Representatives has passed a resolution to honor former president Vaclav Havel, authorizing that a bust of the Czech leader be displayed in the U.S. Capitol’s Freedom Foyer.

Announcing the bipartisan resolution, Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee Ed Royce cited events in Crimea as he paid tribute to Havel's contributions to two "vibrant European democracies," the Czech and Slovak Republics.

Royce referred to Havel's strong support of RFE/RL, which moved from its headquarters in Munich to Prague in 1995 at Havel's invitation.

The bust honoring Havel will be placed alongside statues of Winston Churchill, Lajos Kossuth and Raoul Wallenberg, said Royce, "to remind future generations of the impact one man can have in the advancement and protection of liberty.”
