How RFE/RL uses cookies
We respect the privacy of our visitors using www.rferl.org and associated sites and pages (our “websites”). This cookies policy provides you with clear and comprehensive information about the cookies we use and the purposes for using them.
Cookies are small pieces of text information, stored on your web browser, which allow site owners to provide its users with a consistent user experience by keep information about some settings and user interactions. Cookies can help provide better performance and can collect analytical data (without storing any personal information) to improve the content and structure of the website in the future.
Cookies can be stored on your device for different timeframes:
Session cookies: these cookies allow us to track the actions of a user during a browser session. A browser session starts when you open the web browser window, and finishes when you close it. Session cookies are created temporarily. Once you close the browser, all session cookies are deleted.
Persistent cookies: these cookies remain on your device for the period specified in the cookie. They are activated each time that you visit RFE/RL websites. They are not deleted automatically when you quit your browser. Each of these cookies has a unique expiration date.
Which cookies do we use? And why?
RFE/RL stores the following types of cookies:
Necessary cookies: these cookies are required to provide proper user experience—without these cookies stored, we would not be able to provide certain features and functionality. We store the data about filled forms (i.e. newsletter subscription form), voting in polls, user interaction with some website layouts and widgets.
Unnecessary cookies, which affect site functionality: these cookies are good to store. They allow our websites to be ranked and rated, and remember preferences such as whether you use the Google translate feature on our websites or not.
Performance cookies: These type of cookies allow us to analyze the performance of the website you use and optimize it if needed.
Analytical cookies: these cookies are used to collect information about the popularity of the website pages, user behavior and interaction with different elements of the page (without storing any personal data). These cookies help us to better understand our user's interactions with our products. We collect this data using Adobe Analytics, Chartbeat and Google analytics tools.
Advertisement cookies: RFE/RL does not have any advertisements on its websites and does not set any advertisement cookies; these cookies are generated by third-party platforms to provide you with more targeted advertisements or content later on their platforms. These cookies are created by services like YouTube, Facebook, and VK.
Third-party cookies
Third-party cookies are set by a domain other than that of the RFE/RL website. If you visit a website, and another entity sets a cookie through that website, this would be a third-party cookie.
These type of cookies are being stored by third-party platforms if there is embedded content on the page (for example, YouTube video embed), or if you share the content on the third-party platform using share functionality on RFE/RL pages (Facebook, VK etc.). These third-party services are outside of the control of RFE/RL. Providers may, at any time, change their terms of service, purpose, and use of cookies, etc.
