Reporting to the RFE/RL Service Director in Prague, Bishkek Bureau Chief will be responsible for all output content from bureau staff and contributors in the broadcast area, and for leading the team to increase impact.

WHAT DOES THE ROLE ENTAIL?

You will be based in Bishkek; Kyrgyzstan and your responsibilities will include:

  • Leading the daily editorial meetings with staff to elicit and identify coverage
  • Providing & developing editorial guidance for and supervises the Service’s online input from the bureau.
  • Maintenance of RFE/RL editorial standards of output on all platforms (e.g., radio, TV, online, SMS), ensuring quality and timeliness of all contributions.
  • Setting expectations for staff for best practice journalism, monitoring and providing guidance, feedback, and support to the team
  • Leading the team in making use of suitable new production and delivery methods in line with developing technologies.
  • Production of journalistic material across all platforms as necessary
  • Acting as requested by the Service Director, as ambassador for RFE/RL in the local political and media environment to enhance RFE/RL's good reputation and standing.
  • Further development and professional growth

ARE YOU THE RIGHT CANDIDATE?

The successful candidate will have:

  • Verbal and written English and Kyrgyz language fluency is a “must”
  • A passion about our mission
  • Experience as a journalist of 8+ years
  • A good familiarity with political, economic, and social situations in the broadcast area as well as with regional and international affairs
  • History of successful handling of progressively challenging assignments.
  • Program budget control-related experience. 2-5 years (Desirable)
  • Substantial editorial experience in international media
  • Team management experience (mandatory)

 

Required Language skills:

  • Broadcast region language Native (Mandatory)
  • English language Proficient (Mandatory)
  • Another relevant language Working Knowledge Oral+Written (Desirable)
