RFE/RL's mission is to promote democratic values by providing accurate, uncensored news and open debate in countries where a free press is threatened and disinformation is pervasive. RFE/RL reports the facts, undaunted by pressure.
The RFE/RL team is searching for our next Foreign Affairs Writer to aid in the creation of original and captivating content for our digital platforms. You will be responsible for global affairs content, demonstrating excellent story-telling and interviewing skills as well as an ability to easily maneuver between breaking news reporting and longer feature assignments. You will work in a fast paced environment, working closely with editors and internal teams, maintaining accuracy and a strong commitment to the recognized integrity and quality of RFE/RL journalism. This position is located in Prague, Czech Republic.
What you’ll accomplish:
- Prepare original or adapted news and feature content, primarily for web and social media platforms, as well as video and audio platforms
- Collaborate effectively with assigned supervisory editor(s) and other team members under deadline pressure
- Maintain a keen eye for what makes a good journalistic story, utilizing excellent interviewing and story-telling skills in daily work and take part in conducting journalistic investigations
- Work both as a field correspondent and from the bureau on short-term news assignments and long-term features
- Develop networks and maintain an extensive and up-to-date database of contacts that cover different areas of expertise
- Participate in training to update digital and technical skills, and embrace new technologies to develop and widen those skills
- Expected to be available during important, breaking news events, and work as assigned by the Service Director or Foreign Affairs Editor
- Contribute to a positive working environment that proactively provides support throughout our teams
What you bring:
- 5+ years experience in journalism
- Familiarity with international and regional affairs in RFE/RL broadcast region, as well as detailed knowledge of political, economic, and social situations
- Substantial editorial experience handling progressively challenging assignments
- Ability to deliver fast, accurate, and compelling content, with an exceptional ability to multitask and prioritize with little supervision
- Advanced level of English, providing ability to translate current affairs texts
- Excellent interviewing and story-telling skills
- Excel in creating content for web and social media platforms using digital journalism skills such as editing, SEO, content boosting, and other modern techniques
- Native level in Romanian
- Proficient in English
- Proficient in Russian desirable
