The Associate Digital Strategy Manager, Subscriptions develops, executes, and assesses digital strategies for subscription products of RFE/RL news services in alignment with RFE/RL’s overarching strategy, as well as the organization’s mission and standards.

Reporting to the Head of Digital Strategy, the Associate Digital Strategy Manager, Subscriptions applies and advises on the use of tools and tactics – informed by data and ruled by editorial priorities – to increase the number of subscribers and their level of engagement, making RFE/RL their preferred source of reliable news.

S/he proposes, prototypes, launches, adapts and assesses the services’ subscription products, including newsletters and direct messaging services, in collaboration with relevant service directors, editors and other colleagues with the goal of increasing the services’ long-term impact in target markets.

The incumbent actively advances collaboration in and across teams across RFE/RL and works towards raising the efficiency of production, distribution, engagement, and loyalty-building efforts of subscription products across digital channels.

S/he helps colleagues adapt to changes in their media environments to advance RFE/RL’s mission and meet its high editorial standards.




  • Manages relevant email and messaging accounts across the organization
  • Develops and optimizes paid, earned, and owned digital subscription strategies
  • Assists and mentors journalists to help advance their subscription products’ impact
  • Proposes, prototypes, launches, adapts and assesses processes aimed at reaching and building relationships with audiences in target markets
  • Seeks out innovative opportunities (and success metrics) in target markets
  • Leads and guides cross-functional project teams to align editorial, technical, analytical, and marketing operations for digital subscription products
  • Reviewes and gives feedback on services’ subscription products and processes
  • Monitors the news media industry for innovative approaches to subscription products, platforms and processes
  • In collaboration with the Training Department, plans and executes training on changes in the digital media landscape, tools and best practices
  • Coordinates projects to innovate new formats in engagement of subscribers
  • Performs other related duties as assigned



University education in journalism or related field or the equivalent in experience is preferred.

Work Experience:

  • At least 1 year of experience in digital journalism, ideally with subscription products
  • Some product management experience, incl. roadmaps and acting in consensus-facilitating roles
  • Awareness of best practices, rules, and industry regulations and standards around podcast production
  • Competencies:
  • Ability to launch, run, and troubleshoot subscription news products
  • Knowledge of news and the news ecosystem
  • History of mentoring and training of journalists 
  • Strong user empathy and understanding of loyalty metrics
  • Strong sense of news judgment, pace, and an eye for detail
  • Familiarity with RFE/RL mission and journalistic standards


  • Proficiency in English
  • Other relevant languages, esp. Russian, preferred

Appointment against this post is on a local basis only. Please note that for the locally advertised positions preference will be given to those with a work permit and/or a valid residence status in the Czech Republic. Locally recruited employees should reside within commuting distance of Prague, Czech Republic, or be willing to move to take up work. They are not eligible for allowances applicable to candidates who are internationally recruited. Rather, they receive statutory benefits as per Czech labor law. Salary scales for locally recruited employees are based on the best prevailing local conditions. RFE/RL does, however, cover the costs of interview travel and, upon appointment, some relocation costs.
