The Director of Digital Innovation leads a team of cross-functional creative thinkers who explore emerging technologies to enable journalists to pursue impactful reporting to reach and serve their communities wherever they are, and to counter growing distortions of open debate. 

The Director is leading a growing team that prototypes solutions to immediate challenges in RFE/RL’s editorial work, including reporting, storytelling, distribution, analytics, automation and security aspects. 

This team works on addressing challenges that exceed the organization’s day-to-day capacity to address. The team also works with teams on incubating innovative ideas that could enhance journalists’ ability to pursue revelatory and compelling reporting.  

This work can’t happen in isolation and requires significant coordination and collaboration. The Director will be working with journalists from across RFE/RL’s 20-plus news teams, with colleagues in other divisions and departments of RFE/RL, and with partner organizations to lead experimentation on critical issues helping RFE/RL advance its mission and meet its high editorial and security standards. This position requires extensive travel and remote collaboration.  

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • You manage a diverse team with backgrounds in journalism, software development, design and user experience, data analysis and other fields.
  • You implement an inclusive, iterative innovation process that is based on needs validated in a structured process.
  • You collaborate with the News Division to prototype, test, and build new capabilities and features into RFE/RL’s publishing systems, including the Pangea CMS and Broadcast Operations, and news surfaces.
  • You maintain and advance RFE/RL’s experimental open-source code repositories, hosting infrastructure and documentation.
  • You build and cultivate extensive partnerships with civil society and other news organizations to assist this innovation work.
  • You conduct applied, interdisciplinary research on emerging technologies.
  • You support the growth, goal setting, professional development, and performance of staff.
  • You closely coordinate your work with other departments at RFE/RL and include colleagues from other departments in cross-divisional projects.
  • You assist in the rollout and integration of solutions to the wider News Division.
  • You perform related work as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in social or technical sciences, or related field or the equivalent in experience is preferred.
  • Certification in agile project management

Work Experience:

  • 5+ years of experience in digital journalism in news organization
  • 5+ years of experience managing complex teams
  • Extensive experience in waterfall and agile project management
  • Extensive experience in software development
  • Experience in positions of increasing responsibility
  • Experience in qualitative research and quantitative analysis

Competencies:

  • Highly empathetic and collaborative
  • Deeply knowledgeable of the news media landscape
  • Thrives in ambiguity and large problem spaces
  • Adapts to and works effectively within a variety of situations, and with various individuals or groups.
  • Broad knowledge of political, economic, and social situations and international affairs acquired through studies, research, writing, travel, or other relevant experience or exposure.

Languages:

  • English
  • Language skills in Russian and other RFE/RL languages are strongly preferred

Salaries for employees in RFE/RL's broadcast regions are competitive, based on prevailing local conditions. Employee benefits in RFE/RL's broadcast regions are in accordance with the local labor law specific to the country.
